Fishing Environments

Wading and Floating

Chimehuin River: This is one of the best rivers in the world to practice fly fishing. Its mouth, at Lake Huechulafquen, is highly appreciated for its large brown and rainbow trout and for the rich history of characters who have left their mark at each of its fishing sites.
In a so-called second stretch, nothing changes as far as fishing quality is concerned and the river may be navigated on a raft. As the CEAN is reached, the third stretch begins. The City of Junín de los Andes lies very near this spot. The river borders the city and runs parallel to the road up to Curva del Manzano, where it turns 90º and heads for the Collón Cura River. This is an incredible stretch. Fishing here is fantastic as the river is full of flumes and pools that will delight anglers. I recommend a 2 or 3 day float trip in this waterway.

Collón Cura: This is a river with changing attractions. Fishing is very good here and catches dazzle many anglers. It ends at the so-called Peri lago, where we will be able to catch trout weighing over 4 kilos.

Aluminé: it starts at the lake bearing the same name and then goes through the City of Aluminé. This is a very quiet and pleasant river. Wading is usual as well as using small gear.

Caleufu: Another Patagonian pearl. It starts at the joint of the Meliquina and Filo Hua Hum Rivers. It is not easily accessed. Its 45km are to be floated as abrupt geographical features are enjoyed. It ends at the abovementioned Peri lago and its large trout are ready to astonish anglers at any moment.

Upper Limay: it starts at Lake Nahuel Huapi. Its course unveils the beauty hidden from the tourist eye. Fishing here is fantastic, as well as the trout size.

Lower Limay (Piedra del Águila): As a consequence of the dam, the river volume is not constant. This is a drawback when it comes to looking for the large trout (and there are many of them). However, this will not deprive us of the pleasure of fishing in small rivulets that start at the main waterway.
At each environment mentioned, fishing is unique and fantastic, as well as in the ones I will mention below.

Provincia de Río Negro
We provide a service of guides in charge of Claudio Huebra, a highly-experienced guide based in the City of Gral. Roca. He is a casting instructor and a fly tier.
We fish at the Negro River, from Roca (La Palangana, La Higuera, Puente Paso Cordoba, Balsa Vieja, etc.) up to Allen, about 25 km approximately.
Fishing is practiced on float tours or with streamers. There are high chances of catching very good rainbow and brown trout, as well as silverside of very good sizes.
Wading is another option, during all-day outings or while camping. If customers wish, we can customize outings according to their availability.
Through Claudio Huebra, Sur Fly Fishing provides one of the best services as far as fishing guides are concerned.
You may hire this service directly with Claudio by calling to: 02941 649195 or sending an e-mail to: claudiohuebra@yahoo.com.ar or else, through this website.

- Province of Chubut - (Esquel and Trevelin) Fishing environments

Corintos River and Percey River: these rivers are usually waded. They are small meadow rivers special to use #4 and #5 gear, nymphs and dries. Rainbow trout and brown trout do not surpass a kilo but in the early and late season, it is possible to catch some larger specimens.
Nant and Fall Creek: it starts at Lake Rosario, and has very good populations of rainbow trout and Patagonian silverside. Trout usually weigh over one kilo; therefore, #6 gear is advisable and may be #4 to try to catch an elusive Patagonian silverside and have fun...
Lake Rosario: a lake producing very interesting trout. It is surrounded by reed and anglers may be surprised if they get a little off shore. Specimens weighing over eight kilos have been caught in this water body. There are records of a 12-kilo trout. Likewise, there are good populations of Patagonian silverside. It is ideal to fish and float with bellys.
Futaleufu River (which in the Mapuche tongue stands for "large") or Grande River: we can organize two and even three-day float tours. It features populations of rainbow trout and large brown trout. #6 gear minimum is recommended, as well as floating and sinking lines. In some cases, variants of the latter are recommended as there are pools over 14 meters deep. As from February, we may try to catch some chinooks salmon, a species that is developing a sustainable population in this river. This salmon is quite difficult to annoy with a fly when not in the spawn beds, but it is not impoissible. For such cases, #8 rods are recommended, two-handed rods if possible, reels with good cast-control and a minimum backing capacity of 200 meters.
